Warm Bodies Deconstruction

We have done a deconstruction of the trailer for "Warm Bodies" as it is an alternative take on the classic zombie film
  • Starts with standard green screen
  • Long shot of main character alone in an abandoned area + voice over, identity of character is unknown at this point, there are only partial shots of this character, his back and an extreme close up of his eyes but not his whole face.

  • Screen goes black and the identity of the character is revealed as the voiceover goes “Oh right it’s because I’m dead”. At this point it is revealed to the audience that the main character is a zombie.  This opposed conventions as zombie films are nearly always taken from the point of view of the humans left behind portraying the zombies as the villains whereas in this film the zombies are the heroes

  • Anchorage of production company
  • The shots that follow establish the life the zombies lead, doing everyday tasks, riding escalators and walking through a station. Reflecting on the mundane lives of a lot of people.  The voice over introduces himself as ‘R’ giving him an identity and making him more relatable to the audience.

  • Medium shot of ‘R’ next to another zombie, the voiceover describes him as his “best friend”  this further humanises R and makes the audience more likely to form an attachment to him as a character.
  • Medium shot then close up of skeletal creatures feeding on a body.  The voiceover calls them ‘Boneys’ As in this film, zombies are portrayed as good, a new villain needed to be established and it has been in the form of these ‘Boneys’ which are worse than zombies.

  • Screen cuts to black
  • Action shots of zombies fighting humans with guns, this reminds the audience that the main character is still a zombie and is not completely good.
  • Another main character is established by a close up shot of her firing a gun in slow motion
  • Cuts to R and slowly zooms in, the edges around him fade to black quickly showing he is no longer in the moment and is fixated on the girl.

  • Cut in to his heart like an X-ray image, it beats once then cuts to his eyes.
  • The music changes to a 60’s love song and a tracking shot follows R as he walks towards the girl.
  • Shot reverse shot close ups on their faces shows the exchange between R and the girl , re-humanising R
  • Several shots show R rescuing the girl until she asks “What are you”
  • Anchorage of another production company and music changes to an upbeat modern song
  • Montage showing the building of the relationship between the 2 main characters and how R and the other zombies are becoming more human

  • The cuts get quicker with the music with shots showing the basic storyline
  • Interlaced in these cuts is the anchorage “This February” “Love” “Makes Us Human”
